Caterpillar is likely best known for its heavy equipment movers and their Old Yellow paint jobs, but the company and its subsidiaries make equipment for all sorts of industrial and commercial applications, among them, generators. Now it’s offering a cleaner solution in a new, solar powered microgrid system aimed at more remote locations like cell towers or remote villages. 

When someone in a community or town goes solar, it helps get their neighbors thinking the same thing. The thought process that begins with: “Well, Marge and George did it, maybe we should too” and leads to more solar power in the neighborhood.  

The cost of solar power continues to drop. But the latest record low price of solar power came in at a stunningly low 2.99 cents per kilowatt hour for solar projects in Dubai. The lowest price came from FRV and Masdar, a consortium of businesses from Abu Dhabi and Spain, respectively.

On May 3 the U.S. solar industry celebrated an important milestone—1 million solar installations across the U.S. It’s an impressive milestone, especially considering that in 2009 the country had just 100,000 solar installations. But perhaps more impressive is that the U.S. will double that number by the end of 2018.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) hasn’t experienced the same evolution of popularity that photovoltaic solar panels have. But the projects that have been developed are generating power and some can even produce through the night. That’s what’s got China’s interest and led to SolarReserve’s new partnership with Shenhua Group Corp. to build 1 gigawatt of solar thermal projects in the country.
