Under the filing by SunEdison NRG would pay $144 million for 2.1 gigawatts of projects throughout the country. If SunEdison makes certain development milestones NRG could pay up to $44 million more.
The news comes after NRG last year changed some of its focus away from renewable energy. However, with this and some other recent moves, including the positive quarterly report from NRG Yield, its yieldco to invest in renewable energy projects, it shows that NRG remains interested renewable energy.
Still, NRG would be paying pennies on the dollar for the projects. “Under NRG's agreement, the company would purchase more than 2 GW of SunEdison renewable energy projects for $188 million—or less than 10 cents a watt,” according to Utility Dive.
NRG’s bid for the projects is considered a stalking horse (or basement floor) bid for SunEdison’s assets. The auction for the assets is set for Sept. 9 and could be approved as soon as Sept. 15.
Meanwhile NRG’s Yieldco, NRG Yield, announced that it is purchasing NRG’s remaining stake in the 250 megawatt California Valley Solar Ranch project. NRG Yield announced the purchase during its second quarter 2016 earnings report on Aug. 9.
SunEdison filed for bankruptcy in April 2016, after going on a purchasing spree. This included a deal to purchase Vivint Solar that deteriorated before SunEdison declared bankruptcy.
