Mango Power M: The review

A card with a photo of the Mango Power M system and key specs. Price $19,999, capacity 15-20 kWh, Pros: High power output, all-in-one design, easy installation. Cons: newer company, expensive.

The Mango Power M is a good battery, but many batteries offer similar features at a lower price. Here’s our expert review:

What’s good

Performance is Mango Power’s strong suit. The M battery stacks up well against competitors, having a high starting capacity of 15 kWh and a great power output for homeowners looking to run power-hungry appliances. With the battery’s LFP technology, you can expect durability and longevity from them.

The M battery can also be expanded, so homeowners have more customization over how much storage they install compared to the Tesla Powerwall, which only comes in one size.

It also includes an EV charger capable of delivering 9.6 kW of power to your vehicle - the same as a standard level 2 charger. Believe it or not, this isn’t a common feature for home batteries.

Mango Power’s all-in-one design requires almost no additional equipment, making installation a breeze.

What’s not-so-good

Despite having some solid products, Mango Power is still in its infancy. Only founded a few years ago, this company doesn’t have the same tried and true reputation as other names that have been in the business longer. Mango Power might take a few more years to establish a more concrete reputation for themselves.

The starting price of the Mango Power M is also expensive. It is very powerful, and the EV charging feature is a great bonus, but the price is steep. For much less, you can get batteries with similar features from a better-known brand.

How does the Mango Power M battery work?

Diagram that shows how the Mango Power M can charge from solar, the grid, or generator, and output power to an EV charger or the main home electric panel

The Mango Power M is a home backup system that can charge from excess solar power or the grid. When your solar panels aren’t producing energy, or you experience a power outage, the Mango Power M will keep your lights on. The system also has EV charging capabilities built-in.

The Mango Power M system has four main components: the M Cabinet, the M Hybrid inverter, the M battery packs, and the M Smart Screen. This fully integrated system connects to your home’s main electrical panel and meter. There are two main configurations for the Mango home battery – whole-home backup power or AC coupling with a new or existing grid-tied solar system.

When you order the Mango Power M, all the corresponding equipment comes with it, down to nuts and bolts, so you don’t have to worry about purchasing additional wiring or equipment.

The M hybrid inverter

The Mango Power M hybrid inverter is the star of the show, designed to connect the system to almost anything. The inverter is advertised as a five-in-one solution – with an automatic transfer switch (ATS), advanced generator start (AGS), rapid shutdown (RSD) transmitter, breakers, and solar connection all built-in.

The M inverter can deliver 12 kW of continuous power and an impressive 24 kW of peak power, meaning it can easily run power-hungry appliances. The inverter can connect to 10.8 kW of AC or 18 kW of DC solar and can even pair with a gas-powered generator.

The inverter also has great expansion capabilities. You can purchase up to ten separate inverters to expand up to a whopping 120 kW of AC output. While a single-inverter unit can run essential appliances, like your fridge or washer and dryer, a 10-inverter system could achieve 100% energy independence for days at a time with ease! This can come in handy for an off-grid living situation.

An energy storage system that large isn’t necessary for most homeowners. But if that interests you, make sure you have the space for it; these inverters are wall-mounted only!

The M batteries

The base unit of the Mango Power M system comes with three interchangeable M battery packs that total 15 kWh. The starting capacity of the M system is still good for most homeowners with solar looking to power some essential appliances when the sun goes down.

The M Batteries utilize Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) technology – a popular battery chemistry for home storage and electric vehicles. LFP batteries are safer and longer lasting than other chemistries, with Mango Power reporting that the M batteries can exceed 6,000 cycles with the proper maintenance.

Four battery packs fit into one M cabinet. Each pack is 5 kWh for a combined total 20 kWh of capacity. But it doesn’t stop there! The M batteries also have expansion capabilities up to 80 kWh, fitting into four separate cabinets.

According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the average home consumes about 30 kWh of electricity daily. Most homeowners would need just one M battery and solar panels to cover that electricity usage. You can expect whole home backup power for multiple days when expanded to its maximum capacity.

The M Cabinet

The M cabinet holds and protects the battery packs. Individual packs can easily slide in and connect to the system.

Measuring 31.5 inches wide and 46.3 inches tall, these cabinets occupy a lot of space. When you have all four battery packs inside, it weighs in at nearly 600 pounds! But, they have a sleek design so it won’t be an eye sore.

If you choose to expand your system’s battery capacity to the full 80 kWh, you’ll need four separate cabinets.

M Smart Screen

Once you have your system installed, you can then hook it up to an M Smart Screen to properly control and monitor your system. The smart screen gives access to many features, including:

  • Running status of the system

  • Live power data

  • Daily and accumulated energy information

  • Failure logs

Its touch screen capability makes it very user-friendly – leaving all of the information to your Mango Power M right at your fingertips. You can still manage your system by downloading the Mango Power App when you're on the go.

How much does the Mango Power M cost?

According to a source from PV Magazine, the Mango Power M has a base price of $19,999, not including any installation costs. That’s more expensive than most of its competitors, with the average solar battery installation costing somewhere around $15,000.

This is the price for the base configuration, which includes the M Inverter, four M battery packs, M cabinet, M Smart Screen, and all of the correct wiring and installation materials. There is no clear indication from Mango Power as to how much any additional inverters, battery packs, or cabinets cost with expansion.

Incentives or financing options for the Mango Power M

The Mango Power M is eligible for the clean energy tax credit, equaling 30% of the system’s total equipment and installation costs. That’s thousands of dollars you can save on your federal income taxes! Other battery storage incentives may be available in your area to help lower the cost, too.

Mango Power has partnerships with KliFi and Enfin to offer solar financing. Both installers and customers who install the Mango Power M are qualified to apply for EnFin financing in a few simple steps:

For installers, you must submit a digital partner application and upload the necessary documents, sign EnFin’s dealer agreement and ACH Payment Form, and complete EnFin’s installer training – which takes approximately one hour.

For customers, you must first use the EnFin intake application and see which loan packages you qualify for, fill out the application form, sign your contract online, and then submit your first payment.

What is the warranty on the Mango Power M?

The Mango Power M comes with 10-year battery and inverter warranties, which is standard in the industry. The warranty promises that your battery packs will maintain at least 70% of their total capacity by the end of the warranty period of 10 years or 15 megawatt-hours of energy throughput, whichever comes first.

There is an option to purchase a 5-year extended warranty for the battery packs to give you 15 years of coverage on your batteries in the event of any malfunctions or workmanship errors.

The extended warranty for the battery packs is $500 each, so if you want to add five additional years of coverage on all four battery packs – it’ll run you $2,000 extra.

The M Smart Screen comes with three years of warranty coverage.

Top uses for the Mango Power M

The Mango Power M has a variety of different uses that can benefit your life and help you transition to being a renewable energy household. A few of its uses include:

Energy storage: When paired with a new or existing solar system, your Mango Power M can function as additional energy storage to create a hybrid solar system. In other words, if your solar panels generate more energy than your home uses, you can store that excess energy in your Mango system for later use.

Backup power during outages: If you live in an area that experiences frequent blackouts or power outages, the Mango Power M can help. The power of the M batteries is enough to power essential high-wattage appliances. If you expand to full capacity, you’ll have enough power to run your entire home for a few days.

Avoiding time of use rates: A benefit of solar panels is access to net metering. If your utility uses time of use rates, you might not get the maximum solar savings you want. With the M system, you can store surplus solar power when electricity prices are low and discharge it when rates are expensive to avoid paying high rates. This can be great for residents of California under NEM 3.0 to get the most out of the new policy.

Bottom line: Is the Mango Power M worth it?

The Mango Power M is a decent home battery system with great features, including high power output and integrated EV charging. But, being a newer brand and having such a high price point, this wouldn’t necessarily be our first choice for energy storage.

If you are looking to invest in a whole home back up system to run large electrical loads like air conditioners, then the Mango M Power could be worth considering. You’ll get the most out of the battery if you pair it with a solar system.

Before you jump into purchasing a Mango Power M, be sure to get energy storage quotes from local solar companies in your area. A reliable installer will help you determine exactly what you need from a battery, and getting multiple quotes can ensure you get the best price possible.
